There are daily lessons in English and Mathematics. The use of Computing is incorporated across the curriculum and the whole school curriculum is underpinned by social, moral, spiritual and cultural education, with a values based and inclusive approach. There are the highest expectations for the behaviour and safety of the pupils at Ashmole Primary. The highest emphasis is placed on the acquisition of the key skills of reading, writing and oral communication in literacy, which is evidenced through pupils’ work across all curriculum areas. In addition, the teaching of Mathematics focuses on age appropriate mathematical knowledge as a starting point, with high expectations for a level of mastery in each year group and an application of mathematical skills across the curriculum. The Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) follow the EYFS curriculum with a planned transition into Year 1 where pupils progress on to the National Curriculum. The work children undertake is planned by the class teacher according to the school schemes of work; prepared by subject leaders. Pupils are provided with a curriculum that will enable them to gain the essential knowledge they need to become educated citizens. There is a daily act of collective worship.
At Ashmole Primary School there is more specialist subject teaching particularly in those areas which may be less well taught by non-specialists for example PE, Music and Spanish. Spanish has been chosen as the language to teach from Reception and that is one of the main languages at Ashmole Academy. Pupils are exposed to the teaching of Spanish through weekly short lessons. The mastering of Spanish will provide a good basis to learn other languages later.
Ashmole Primary has excellent grounds for sporting use and the development of sporting talent. Sports coaches and teachers work together from Reception, teaching lessons, running after school clubs and running competitive sports. The school has access to all the sporting facilities of the Academy and can support other primary schools in the area which may lack these facilities. The primary school aims to be a specialist centre for the teaching of Music at primary education.
The Ashmole Primary curriculum enables children to immerse themselves in exciting, meaningful, and memorable learning experiences. Links are made between subjects using themes to motivate and engage learners. The Ashmole Primary curriculum is well-sequenced with clear content and end points to enable progress for all.
The curriculum is celebrated through assemblies, trips, visitors, extra-curricular events, displays and a range of engaging activities. This broad and balanced curriculum enables children to discover new interests, develop strengths and advance passions and talents. We engage children and encourage independent, creative thinking across subject areas, and key themes of inspiration flow through the curriculum.
The curriculum takes an enquiry-led, knowledge-rich and skills-based approach, where children develop and strengthen their knowledge while acquiring and using a range of skills – the foundations to lifelong learning.
